The incredible variety of wildlife in the region is one of the main reasons why the Tambopata Nature Reserve is so popular with ecological tourists.

The Reserve is located on the southern part of the Madre de Dios River, between the districts of Inambari and Tambopata, in the province of Tambopata. It encompasses 278,284 hectars. The climate is that of a sub-tropical forest., The temperature stays around 26 degrees Celsius all year around, and the air is humid. It is possible to see a great diversity of wildlife, such as the Giant Nutria, ( called also the river wolf ), the jaguar, the ocelot, the sajino, the sachavaca, the anaconda, the paujil, etc., all living a tranquil life in the jungle. There is an amazing quantity of avian life, with at least 590 species represented. We highly recommend the Tambopata Nature Reserve. Check it out.

Itinerari Expedition to Tambo Pata 5d/4n

» Day 1:

After welcoming you at the airport, we will take you into town to the river port. If you like we can stop off at the marketplace, where medicinal plants from the jungle are sold, along with local crafts. The first couple days on the river take us deep into the Nature Reserve. We will be traveling upriver in a motorized canoe. It is a 5 hour journey, with lunch provided on the boat. We can stop whenever you see any interesting wildlife.. The first night will be spent at a small lodge within sight of the river.

» Day 2:

We will take a hike deeper into the jungle after we eat breakfast. We’ll see an enormous diversity of plants and animals. We will continue on along the river til we arrive at Bahuaja-Sonnene National Park. We will camp this 2nd night near the “Chuncho”, which is where all the birds come everyday to lick the mineral salts that complete their diet. You’ll see macaws and parrots and toucans, too. We will have time to take a nature walk deep into the jungle.

» Day 3:

We will arise very early in order to get to the salt lick at dawn. It will be thrilling to see all the colorful birds in their native habitat. Later, after breakfast, we can go for a walk all around the Chuncho. We still have to go upriver for 3 hours to arrive at our final destination. Our destination is a small island, where we will set up camp. After we arrive, you can choose to go swimming or hiking if you like.

» Day 4:

Up and at ‘em early in the morning. There is a bigger salt lick nearby, that draws in the brightly colored jungle birds from miles and miles around. What a fantastic sight! Thousands of parrots, 5 different species of macaws, and toucans galore, all eating at the collpa, or resting in the nearby trees. Depending on how much energy everyone has, we will hike out into the jungle once more. Then in the afternoon we will head downriver on the return voyage to Puerto Maldonaldo. There we can enjoy a great supper, and perhaps even try the local cuisine.

» Day 5:

Generally the flights out of Puerto Maldonaldo leave in the morning. Therefore, the activities we can fit in on day 6 depend on what time your flight leaves. Usually it is an early breakfast and then we’ll take you out to the airport and help you board your flight.
